Knole

Historic sites

A medieval deer park with a vast house at its centre, over 600 years of maintenance and change have seen Knole transformed from a modest manor to the grand patchwork house you see today. As you weave through Knole Park and cross the brow of the hill you’ll be greeted with the magnificent sight of one of England’s most significant houses.

Inside, Knole’s spectacular Showrooms are home to unrivalled collections of Jacobean furniture and one of the earliest portrait galleries in the country. The visitor route is the same one used for over 250 years, so you’ll be walking in the footsteps of some of the house’s most famous residents, including Vita Sackville-West.

Visit now and you’ll be witness to some of the biggest changes in Knole’s history. A five-year, £20m conservation and building project with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund is well underway. It will see Knole’s Showrooms installed with new heating and lighting, and more new, exciting spaces open to visitors than ever before. In 2015 work continues to create a conservation studio in Knole’s medieval barn, and to extend and refurbish the Brewhouse Café. This year we’ll launch our new Bookshop Café and a new visitor welcome experience charting Knole’s history through artefacts and digital displays. While this work is ongoing you can enjoy refreshments from the Outdoor Café – a catering unit with outdoor seating.

Access information: We aim to make Knole as accessible as possible for all visitors, within the constraints of a historic building. If you have any kind of disability, please get in touch, as we may be able to support you to make your visit more enjoyable; or for full access details go to our website www.nationaltrust.org.uk/knole and click on “facilities and access”. There is wheelchair access to all Green Court spaces and the Great Hall. There is no wheelchair access to the Showrooms on the first floor.

Getting here: If driving, please use Sat Nav postcode TN13 1HU which will take you to St Nicholas’ Church, from where Knole is clearly signposted.
